Withdrawal Symptoms

I'm getting race withdrawal symptoms. Wifey and me have been looking for some races to take part in for the month of November but can't seem to find any. I know there is the Penang International Bridge run in 20 days or so but we're not taking part in that race cos we didn't sign up fast enough and besides it's a little too far for us. We'd have to arrange babysitting for the two brats at home and we don't have the time to do that.

So for now, wifey is scouring the web to locate some local races in our vicinity and hopefully she'll find something :D In the meantime, we decided to make our own 10K race by running one today, just the two of us ... LOL!

Never Too Old ...

I was at the MPSJ stadium today accompanying wifey for her run. After doing an 8KM session around the track and while waiting for wifey to finish her 8KM session I happened to notice this elderly lady running on the tracks.

There was nothing exceptional about her except that she was dressed in this pair of sneakers, a sarong and a blouse and had this look of gritty determination on her face as she did lap after lap. This got me thinking about all those lazy bums I encountered that had tons of excuses why they don't run (or even want to workout).


'Aiyaaa, where got time to run.'

'Cannot workout la, my legs can't take it.'

'I'm too old to run (or workout).'

Those are just some of the excuses I have heard in my lifetime and to be honest, I've used them myself. But seeing that elderly lady doing lap after lap just goes to show that it all boils down to WANTING to get out there and run.

It really is easy, all you need is just some determination with a lot less excuses and you'll do just fine. Which is why I'm enjoying my runs these days even though I ache each and every day after my runs.

My hats off to that determined auntie today :D

Mizuno Wave Run 2010 Review

The Mizuno Wave Run, what can I say about it except that it was a great run but the hills were something else altogether!

Got a little lost getting to the venue even though I recced the place earlier. Ended up getting to the venue 15 minutes later than our original planned time. Both wifey and me like to get to the race venues early cos of the parking issues so this time we had to park quite far and walk to the start location which was quite a distance, mind you.

The race overall was pretty good but like I said earlier, the hills and inclines littered throughout the route were a challenge, especially for one who doesn't do incline training. But I'm pretty pleased with my performance cos I completed the route without stopping even once!

The race started out with the women running first followed by the men ten minutes or so later. I wasn't at all happy with the route cos it was pretty narrow with everyone being sandwiched together for quite a while before it started spreading out.

The first 4 kilometers were spent just cruising and trying to avoid the slower runners who were beginning to walk and block the faster runners. While I respect each and everyone there for even taking part but please keep to your left if you intend to walk and let the other runners through. It's not easy having to weave in and out when you're trying to conserve as much energy as possible to fight the hills at the later stage.

I was so focused on my running that I missed the water station at KM4 (I think) and went 'alamak, die la!' but good thing I managed to catch up with wifey who still had her Gatorade with her which I managed to take a few sips, otherwise I would have been in real trouble from a parched throat.

KM5 to KM8 was pretty decent with more flats than inclines. I drove past the route way before the race and knew what was ahead from KM8 to the finish. I wasn't looking forward to it and was dreading it cos there was this mother of all hills to fight through before the final leg towards the finish. Even driving up the hill in my car was daunting let alone running up the darn thing!

I was surprised to see another water station after KM8 (I think) and this time I made sure I didn't miss the darn thing, grabbed a bottle of water, took a few sips and got focused to take on the final two inclines. Oh, another gripe coming up, when you guys and gals queue to grab that much needed water at the extremely few water stations, please for gods sake, don't stop and drink right there at the water station and block runners from trying to grab some much needed H2O! Take your cups, move on or move aside and let the rest through. The rest of us need our water replenishment's too!

As expected, the last incline was a killer. You're all tired, exhausted, your legs ache, your lungs are gasping for air and you have to fight this really steep (wifey said people were calling it the 'aiyoo' hill ... LOL!) just before you finish. And the hill went on like forever. The moment I reached the summit of that hill and saw the final downhill stretch I almost cried in delight!

It was 1 hour and 8 minutes (unofficial timing) before I finally crossed the finish line to cap my 5th race for the year. Not really one of my better timing but heck, with the amount of inclines along the way, I thought I did good :D

On a different note, I'd like to thank that guy who pulled wifey out of the way from an oncoming car and probably saved her some serious injuries. Thank you, whomever you are. For the traffic marshal's though, how the heck could you let cars through while there were still lots of runners on the road. In a race like this, the runners get priority before anything else. In fact some of you even had the cheek to ask me to stop so you could let traffic through. That elicited a nice nasty shout from me. Don't ever ask a runner in the middle of the race to stop and let traffic through. I thought it was ridiculous!

And on a sadder note, I'd like to offer my condolences to the family of a runner who collapsed and passed away during the race. It is never nice to hear of such things after a race. I have no idea as to the reason why but whatever it was, may he rest in peace.

The Mizuno Wave Run 2010

The Mizuno Wave run starts this Sunday and I'm not exactly about it. This is the first time I'm doing this run and while it's an 11km route, I've run numerous 10K's before which shouldn't pose a problem to me but I took a drive to survey the route with wifey and it looks to be pretty challenging what with all the ups and downs.


I for one prefer running a flat terrain but I guess you can't always have flat terrain. Wifey is relishing the challenge and has been doing incline training unlike lazy old me who doesn't bother with incline and concentrate more on speed.

Coupled with my recent bout of the flu and fever, I've missed a few of my regular training runs and I foresee a hard run for myself. But I'm up to the challenge and hopefully can complete the route in decent time.

I hope the weather will cooperate and not be too darn stifling. The current heat wave has me worried about dehydration and I aim to keep myself hydrated as much as I can cos I know I'll sweat off quite a bit of liquid from my body.

This will also be the second time I'm going to use my Brooks Ghost 3 for a race, which served me pretty well for the Nike City 10K run last week. The shoes was surprisingly comfortable and well cushioned that it felt like I was running on sponge. My other shoes, an Adidas, though lighter than the Brooks is not nearly shock proof enough.

Well, with all that said and done, though a little apprehensive I'm looking forward to the run :D

Three days to the Nike 10K run this weekend and then followed by the Mizuno wave run the following weekend. I must be nuts to attempt two runs in two consecutive weeks!

Nike City 10K Run

For those of you who chanced upon this blog, I bid you a warm welcome. This blog is still pretty new and not fully completed yet so bear with me while I tweak it a whole lot more.

This blog was created as an extension to express my thoughts on my passion for running. Like I said earlier, I'm still working on it but expect to read about my escapades about my runs and the races I take part in.

The next upcoming race that I'm going to be running in will be in 7 days time which is the Nike City 10K Run slated for Sunday the 10th of October 2010. Rushed down to Avenue K first thing Saturday morning to collect my Nike running vest and timing chip.


The vest was a little on the bright side with it being in Florescent like green, though my favourite color is green, this one is a little too bright for my liking. But then, it's an original Nike Vest, so no complaints :D

Too commemorate the run, I went out and bought a new Brooks Ghost 3 running shoes which I simply adore though I haven't really tested it out yet. My current Adidas running shoe is perfectly fine and race tested and I didn't really need a new pair of running shoes but I have a reason to buy the Ghost 3 which I will reveal in my next post in a day or two :D
