Self Imposed Ban

I've been on a one week self imposed ban from running. My shin splints have taken a turn for the worse and with wifey's insistence (not to mention threats of breaking my legs ... LOL!), I've taken myself out of the running loop for a week to give my leg a rest and a chance to heal.

I thought I could block out the pain and simply run though it but it's not working and I feel excruciating pain during my runs which is a sign telling me to either rest or get totally crippled and not be able to run ever again.

I guess my over enthusiasm is the culprit here. I've been raking up the mileage non stop on a daily basis and may have done too much, too fast which resulted in me getting shin splints. I should really know better since I'm not a newbie at running.

It's been three days since I last ran but it feels like forever and I've still got at least another 5 days to go before I even attempt to run. The pain has subsided considerably though I still feel a soreness in my left side of the leg which is slowly but surely getting lesser with each passing day. At least now, I can walk without flinching too much :P

I hope to be back hitting the roads by end of next week. *Fingers crossed*

Change Of Style

I did a slow but good 15K run today and am learning to deal running with shin splints. Yes, my shin splint problems doesn't seem to want to heal as fast as I want it too and have resigned myself to the fact that it's going to be with me for quite a while.

I could ease off running for a few weeks (argghh, such blasphemy!) and try to let it heal but I can't seem to quell this running itch I get everytime I see someone running. I know I should really get some rest but I'm beginning to deal with the pain and am learning to change the way I run to accomodate the shin splints.

So far, I've found a pretty decent striding technique that almost complete dissipates the pain during my runs. I run like every other runner out there by landing on my heels and pushing off with the balls of my feet but today I tried landing a little more on my midsole and pushing off with the balls of my feet which surprisingly actually helped reduce the pain by quite a bit, almost to the point of no pain and with hardly any reduction of my regular pace.

I'll be trying this style of running for a bit, at least until the pain finally eases off completely. With that said and done, I'm looking forward to tomorrow evening's run :D You know what would be great? If there was a shop out there that runners could go and just change their legs when they get injuries like the changing of tyres, now wouldn't that be awesome? :D

A Break Too Long

I haven't run in three days and it's the longest non running period of rest I've taken since last year. But it isn't a voluntary rest period, I had to force myself to take a few days off running for the shin splints on my leg left heal a little.

Trust me, it wasn't easy taking this tiny break cos everytime I saw someone running, I wanted to head home and put on my shoes and hit the roads! Damn, I've become addicted to running that these days I even dream about running ... LOL!

The thing is I was never this addicted to running in my younger days. Yes, I loved to run. I can remember the times me and my best buddy Sean would run almost every morning and we both enjoyed it, but I wasn't a fanatic.

These days though, everything I do seems to somehow be associated with running. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. If I miss a day of running, I feel incomplete. It's like something is not right, so you can imagine how I felt the past three days. I suppose being addicted to running is way better than being addicted to lazing around, drugs, cigarettes or alcohol.

I'm actually so happy today cos I'll be going for my run session this evening. Enough of taking a break already. The leg feels much better and I've been taking care of it by icing and massaging it with a healthy does of ibuprofen, not forgetting the calf and shin strengthening routine I've been on. I hope it holds out for my run today and doesn't give me any more trouble. *Fingers crossed*

Where Are All The Races?

My running is getting much better progressively. I've steadily increased my mileage to a minimum of 10K each run session with a long 21K at the end of the week. I must say that I'm enjoying my runs these days :D

I would enjoy it even better if I didn't suffer from shin splints, which I happen to be suffering from right now. It hurts like hell and I'm taking a few days off running to let it subside a little. I don't want it to get worse to the point of not being able to run. That would be disastrous!

It's already the middle of February and I haven't even ran a single race yet for this year. The nearest one that I know of which I haven't signed up for is the Bareno run in March. I don't think I'm going for that run cos I don't really want to run a race that is sponsored by some product that has nothing to do with running.

I'm looking forward to the Energizer Night Race in Sepang but that's still a long way off. It should be fun running on the Sepang circuit at night. I've signed up for the 21K and wifey has signed up for the 10K. She's been training pretty hard as well and is improving by leaps and bounds. I'm really proud of her and the effort she puts in for her runs.

But for right now, I've got to get this shin splint healed first and then concentrate of improving my pace. Happy running people :D

Rest And Recuperate

The Chinese new year is just around the corner, more like tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it simply because I'll be off the entire week until next Monday ... woohoo ... which should give me pretty much a lot of opportunities to run but I'm going to do the exact opposite.

I've been pushing myself a little too hard the last month and my legs and body are beginning to show signs of fatigue. While I love running and would welcome the coming holidays as an opportunity to put in more mileage I also value my body. I don't want to ruin it to the point of getting injuries and putting my running on hold.

So, this CNY, I'm just going to sit back and take a much needed break from running, at least for a couple of days, just to let my body and legs repair itself. But that doesn't mean I'll be inactive. I plan to do some light weight workouts just so I don't slack off completely.

Before I go, I'd like to wish you all in Malaysia who celebrate the festival a Gong Xi Fa Cai. And remember, drive safe while you're on the road and be kind to anyone running on the roads :D
