You Know It's Time ...

You know it is time to resume running when...

* You try to do a few push-ups and discover that certain body parts refuse to leave the floor.

* Your children look through your wedding album and want to know who mom's first husband was.

* You get winded just saying the words '10 kilometer run'.

* You come to the conclusion that, if God really wanted you to touch your toes each morning, He would have put them somewhere around your knees.

* You analyze your body honestly and decide what you should develop first is your sense of humor.

* You step on a talking scale and it says, 'Come back when you are alone'.

Rest When We Die

It's a public holiday in this part of the world. I'd like to wish all those who celebrate the festival, a happy Thaipusam, if there is such a greeting anyway ... hehehe ...

I love public holidays (who doesn't) cos it gives me and wifey a lot more time to satisfy our running craze. On workdays, I can't really run all that far and would have to rush through the run just so I can get home and get ready for work.

Public holidays on the other hand give me loads of time to take it easy on my runs and not worry about having to rush home for work and stuff. Unfortunately we don't have all that many public holidays :P

This morning we woke up bright and early at 6.00am, though I was still half a sleep but credit goes to wifey for forcing me out of bed, to head out to the KLCC park for our run. Trust me, we're both a little insane in a way to wake up while people are still soundly asleep in bed on a public holiday and drive all the way into the city (which is not near, mind you) just to run. We could always run in our housing area but we like the KLCC park which has a synthetic running path that is forgiving on the knees of old fogeys like me ...hehehe ...

Though I put in my required mileage, my run wasn't all that good. It was a difficult and sluggish run cos I was still half asleep throughout the run and there were many a times I wanted to just stop and snooze under one of those shady trees they have there ... LOL! But overall, I still kept to a steady regular pace throughout and managed to cover 15KM's of running for the day.

Had my Brooks Ghost 3 on and like I said in my previous post, it's has exceptional cushioning and will be my choice of shoes for my longer runs. My other two shoes will be used for my shorter and speed running days.

With that said and done, I'm going to head to bed to grab a short afternoon nap before heading out with wifey this evening for some running gear shopping :D Have a great holiday folks and don't forget to run. As my best buddy and fellow runner Sean would say, we rest when we die :P

Brooks - Run Happy

I knew running shoes can make a whole lot of difference in your runs but I didn't know how much a difference until today.

This morning, wifey and me went for our usual Saturday morning run session. We went to our favourite location again which was the TTDI park. This is only the second time we've been here. I have this habit of alternating between my three pairs of running shoes, the Mizuno Wave Precision 10, the Adidas Litestrike Eva and my Brooks Ghost 3.

Last week I ran this route with my Brooks Ghost 3 but today I decided to use my Adidas which in hindsight was one of the silliest decisions I made in a long time. While the Adidas was lightweight and served me well on terrain that was much softer like synthetic tracks or asphalt roads, it was horrible on a track that was 85% cobblestone like, which was what the TTDI park was.

My legs took a horrible pounding and I could feel every single shock from those blasted cobblestones right up to my teeth! It was by far one of my worst runs to date and I suffered in pain with each and every step I took, though I still did push myself to complete a minimum of 12 kilometers. It took a while for me to recover after the run just to drive back.

I had my Brooks on last week and that shoe, as far as I'm concerned, has cushioning second to none! Running the same route last week with my Brooks was a breeze, I didn't even feel a thing. The cushioning was phenomenal. I don't care if people say that a heavily cushioned shoe will tire your legs out in the long run but heck, I'd rather have tired feet than feet that feels like it's being hit with a sledgehammer every step I take.

At least from now on, I know that Brooks will be my choice of shoe for terrains that are hard and unforgiving but that doesn't mean I'm going to neglect my Adidas and Mizuno though. Those shoes work better on more gentle terrains and will do just nice for my speed runs :D

Banned From Running

I've been banned from running by wifey! Oh, the horror of it all! It's like telling a little kid he can't have ice-cream anymore. How could she? Especially when she herself is crazy about running!

Well, the ban only lasts for today. You see, I ran a 14K run this morning and wanted to run another couple more kilometers this evening when I came back from work. She absolutely forbade me from running cos she said that I'll be running another 10K minimum tomorrow morning and she doesn't want me to overdo my runs and get an injury.

She has a point though. The last time I was this enthusiastic about running, I ran one run after another without stopping and ended up getting a painful shin-splint that lasted nearly a month and a half. It made running life a hell for me.

I should really know better than to run too much and not get enough rest for the body to heal but I just can't help it. I'm feeling pretty energetic today. I guess waiting a little longer till tomorrow is not really all that long. Now I can do an even longer run tomorrow :D

I've actually been taking my running to a different level. I'm eyeing to take part in a full marathon in the forth quarter of the year and have been training in earnest for it hence the excitement and enthusiasm I have for running daily.

I'm not sure if I'll even be ready for a full marathon but I definitely wanna give it a shot. It's something I've always wanted to do and wifey fully supports my goal to run a full marathon. She's more worried that I'll injure myself if I push too hard in training.

I wonder if I can sneak out after this post for a quick run around the block without her noticing I'm gone ... LOL!

The Hills Are Alive ...

Wifey and me did our run session at the TTDI park early this morning. We couldn't find the park last week but managed to figure out its location this week and decided to try it out. There's only one thing I can say about this park. AWESOME!

First off, it's a beautiful park to begin with. It's enveloped by a backdrop of greens and starts off with a nice incline (depends on where you start) and ends with a long downhill stretch to recover from the earlier inclines.

The park has three routes, from what I saw with the outermost route being the longest and most challenging one. It's approximately 2.2 kilometers and the inclines are nicely placed on one end to give your legs and lungs a nice workout. There is one detour somewhere a little up the start of the second (or was that third?) uphill stretch for those who don't want to take on the next set up uphill stretches with the third route being approximately 1.1 kilometers that encircles the lake at the entrance.

Bright and early ...
I started off with the outer route and took on the hills which I love doing these days. I relish routes that incorporate hilly sections. They give the lungs, heart and legs a good workout. The air was cool and though I felt a slight tightening of my calf muscles (due to improper warming up) at the early stages, the entire run was pretty good.

I ended the run on the outer lake route, clocking up a total of 11 kilometers with a time of 59 minutes, not too bad for an old fart like me ... LOL! Wifey also loved the route and made her personal best time for a run totaling approximately 10 kilometers. I'm darned proud of her and her running these days :D

I don't have any negative things to say about the park except that the running path was a little too small and was a tight squeeze if there were more than 3 people walking together on it. The other thing I didn't fancy was the suspension bridge that was hard on my knees. Other than that it's an awesome place to run.

Though it's quite a distance from were we live, both wifey and me don't really mind waking up in the wee hours of the morning just to drive there to satisfy our lust for running :D I'll most definitely be there again next week. Now I'm off to bed cos I have another running session planned for tomorrow, this time much closer to home though :D

A word of advise, make sure your wear running shoes with good cushioning (like my Brooks Ghost 3 ... LOL!) cos the track can be a little hard on the knees.

Park Hopping

So the new year is upon us and I still haven't found a race to run for this month. Wifey has also been searching high and low trying to locate at least one 10K for us but so far no luck. Looks like we're destined to go through January without a single race.

Our aim this year is to run a minimum of one race a month, the more the merrier. I've also targeted to try and take part in one full marathon somewhere in the forth quarter of the year, that is if I'm up to it. Training for me has begun in earnest after the holiday celebrations, time to burn off all those rich holiday goodies I've been swallowing.

Actually both wifey and me have become addicted to running that besides our usual daily training sessions, we're always on the lookout for places to run for our long runs, safe places to run that is. Running on the roads these days can get you killed with the morons we have behind the wheels.

So what we do is we search for park with running paths for our weekend long runs. So far, we like the KLCC park that covers a circuit of 1.3 kilometers. The scenery is pretty decent too but it's a little too far, not that it stops us anyway.

Last week, I read that TTDI had this park that had a running circuit covering 2.2 kilometers and we decided to check it out. Unfortunately though we took a wrong turn and ended up at this place called Kiara hills which was an awesome place to do some fartlek training. It was more like a forest reserve that went all the way to heaven ... LOL!

Once you reach the top after a 1km uphill walk that's perfect as a warm up, you'll start at this intersection with a 2km route that is littered with some steep slopes and even steeper downhill stretches which would really ruin your day if you slipped and fell ... LOL! I relished attacking the uphill stretches and am looking forward to tackling it again. Oh and one word of warning though, you'd have to also watch out for monkeys crossing your path while you run cos there are loads of them there.

After that hill run, we weren't satisfied and went to look for the TTDI park that we wanted to go to in the first place. Again we took a wrong turn and ended up at this other mini forest reserve park like thingy quite near the IBM building and decided to try it out thinking it was the park we were looking for. But it turned out to house a teeny weeny running path and I even saw a huge black mean looking snake which had both wifey and me running out of there faster than you can spell s-n-a-k-e ... LOL!

Suffice to say that was the end of our running for the day and we vowed that we would find this other park for this weekends long run session. I managed to find it today while on the way for an appointment and I must say I was salivating just thinking of running this circuit. It looked like it had some mean uphill stretches that I'm going to enjoy tackling :D

Okay, now I'm going to get some rest cos my legs are aching slightly from my 15km training run this morning.
